When you try to skim directly toward an oncoming wave, the nose of your board will naturally push water, creating drag that halts your progress. To reach the clean face of a wave further out, you must master the side-slip.
Breaking the Surface Tension
By pivoting your board ninety degrees to your direction of travel, you minimize the surface area pushing against the water. This sideways slide allows you to hydroplane over deep water channels without bogging down.
Controlling Your Weight Distribution
Keep sixty percent of your weight on your back foot while keeping the board perfectly flat against the water surface. If you lean too heavily on either edge, the rail will catch, resulting in an immediate and violent wipeout.
Re-engaging the Rail for the Turn
As you approach the wave face, swing your hips back into alignment to face forward. This re-engages the rail and allows you to carve hard into the pocket, turning the wave's energy into pure vertical climb.
